Set against the background of trauma and violence in apartheid South Africa, Hell Camp is the true story of a young woman whose dream of becoming a pop star is her only way out of an abusive family relationship.
Dominated by her manipulative mother, Niki Smart turns to alcohol for solace, but it is only much later when she becomes a parent herself, that her battle for control and survival really begins.
I worked with Niki to adapt her memoir into a screenplay that is laugh-out loud funny and heartbreakingly sad – a tragicomedy of momentous proportions.
